Calculate transport emissions

Transport emissions in ErgOps are calculated from a recorded shipment: how far the cargo travelled, how heavy it was, and a governed emission factor. One transport activity can then be reused — in Scope 3, in a product footprint or for a customer — without being counted twice.

Before you start#

You need an editing role, and at least one active emission factor in kgCO₂e per tonne-kilometre for the transport mode you use.

Supported modes#

Mode Distance you can use
Road Manual, imported or supplier-provided distance
Sea Manual, imported or supplier-provided route distance. Straight-line distance is not accepted.
Air Manual, imported, supplier-provided or great-circle distance

Record a transport activity#

  1. Enter the Activity date and choose the Mode.
  2. Enter the Origin and Destination — a location code, or coordinates.
  3. Choose the Distance source and enter the Distance (km).
  4. Enter the Cargo weight in tonnes.
  5. Choose the Business context: Scope 3 Category 4 (upstream transport), Scope 3 Category 9 (downstream transport), or a product footprint stage (inbound, outbound or inter-facility).
  6. Optionally choose a Customer to attribute the activity to one of your customers.

ErgOps never invents a distance. If a distance cannot be resolved, the activity stays unresolved until you provide one.

How the result is calculated#

tonne-kilometres = cargo (t) × distance (km)

emissions (kgCO₂e) = tonne-kilometres × emission factor (kgCO₂e/tkm)

For example, 10 t carried 550 km is 5,500 tkm. The calculation boundary — such as tank-to-wheel — comes from the factor you select and is shown with the result. See Logistics methodology.

Reuse without double counting#

A calculated activity can be used once in each place it belongs:

  • as a Scope 3 Category 4 or 9 record
  • as an inbound or outbound stage in a draft product carbon footprint

The Used In column shows where an activity is already used. Using the same activity twice in the same place is blocked.

Export#

The Export tab creates XLSX, PDF, CSV or evidence-package exports of your transport records. Exports are audit-ready records, not certifications.
